VILLAGE GATEWAYS

Following on from a previous post, progress has not been quick but advances have been made.

The Parish Council has accepted a quote from Saul Harvey, at Ham Hill, to make a village name stone for the northern end of the village. This will match the existing stone at the southern entrance to North Perrott. He is currently keeping an eye out for something that will match our existing stone for size and shape.

In the meantime, there has been some discussion about what form the wooden gates will take. An Oak tree has been felled and milled and Gordon Hall has kindly offered to construct “gates” or “hurdles” that will accentuate the entrance to the village at both ends. The idea is to make sure that vehicles realise they are entering an historic village and that they are required to slow down and pay attention to the safety of both life and our historic buidings that abutt the main road. This will be a permanent replacement to the 20 is plenty banners that were put up a few years ago.

The Parish Council has approved the idea in principle and the new stone will be engraved with the words “NORTH PERROTT” in painted letters. The gates or hurdles will be in natural oak. However, deciding on a esthetic and functionial design has not been so easy, because of limited space available at both locations. Gordon has kindly come up with a series of designs that he thinks led him to what we think might be the most appropriate solution for what we have in mind.

The original thought was to have a conventional wooden gate behind the stone, but picture 1 shows how this might look. The gateway would be partially masked by the stone and this configuration would compromise the impact of the design and might confuse the message that we are trying to convey.

Pictures 2 & 3 are an evolution of using vertical hurdles, one from picket fencing and the other as if wings of a showjump. These accetuate the shape of the existing stone and give the design an appearance of it being of one purpose, rather than an afterthought. It also provides more space to add an extra message, should it be required permanently or from time to time.

Gordon’s final design, picture 4, takes his ideas from 2 & 3 and progresses them back to the design of a gate, with horizontal bars and cross braces. This gives a more traditional form and makes the design visually wider than those with vertical uprights.

Constructive feedback from village residents would be most welcome, either here or directly with Gordon. Any ideas or comments will be taken into account before construction commences and there will be a chance to discuss his designs at the next Parish Council Meeting (and perhaps again in September, although we hope to have something in place by the end of summer).

There is no room at the southern location for a hurdle on the oposite side of the road but in the new location at the northern end, the stone will be closer to the road and one hurdle placed between the stone and the hedge and the other hurdle will be on the other side of the road, in a more standard Village Gateway format.

ANNUAL VILLAGE MEETING

The Annual Village Meeting will take place at 7pm on Tuesday 2nd May at the Hoskyns Memorial Hall.

Afterwards there will be the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council at 7.30pm and immediately afterwards, a normal Bi-Monthly meeting to cover regular council business.

The Annual Village Meeting does not have an agenda and is a opportunity for anyone to discuss topics perhaps not normally covered at Council meetings. It is also an opportunity for other village groups to report on their activities to a wider audience.

The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council starts with the Chairman’s report and then election and signing in of officers for the next 12 months. This is normally quite brief.

Then follows the normal Bi-monthly meeting for which the agenda was published on the Village website last week.

IN MEMORIUM

Losing any member of our community is a sad occaison and just lately, we have lost 3 characters that were perhaps, larger than life.

In January, Mike Back, a long time resident of the village and even longer time supporter of North Perrott Cricket Club, passed away after a long illness. His total commitment to the Cricket Club included designing and overseeing the construction of the Pavillion. While President, Mike devoted much of his time to ensureing a strong bond existed between the village and the club. Last year the Pavillion was named after him in permanent memory to his service to the club.

Allan Edwards also left us in January. Allan was a man who made his presence known and wanted to be a force for good in everything that he did, especially for the village. This was especially marked by his committment as a Parish Councillor where he excelled in raising money for capital projects. He and his wife Caroline renovated the Old Rectory to an extremely high standard, something that he strove to achieve in all aspects of his life.

Allan Jay died more recently, having spent the last three years in a nearby care home. Allan’s destiny with North Perrott started in 1948, when he first met Bill Hoskyns at a fencing competition and they became life long friends. Allan was an accomplished fencer and as well as two silver Olympic medals, his sporting career peaked in 1959, when he won the World Foil Championships and came second the same year in the Epee, losing a second Gold by the smallest of margins. An astonishing accomplishment. Allan retired to North Perrott after a successful career as a London Solicitor.

Everyone who knew them are invited to join their families in celebrating these remarkable lives at the following events in chronological order. The dates are also on the village website calendar.

Allan Jay – Funeral at Yeovil Crematorium on Monday 20th March at 1.20pm and afterwards at Haselbury Mill. (This funeral is also available online https://allan-jay.muchloved.com/)

Mike Back – A Celebration of His Life at Haselbury Mill on 14th April at 3pm.

Allan Edwards – A Service of Remembrance at St.Martins Church, North Perrott and afterwards at the Old Rectory on 1st May at 2pm.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS

There’s nothing like singing carols to really get everyone into a festive mood for Christmas.

This year there are two opportunities in North Perrott to clear out your wind pipes and really belt out your favourite tunes.

Everyone is welcome at both events, so lets have a good start to the festive season.

SUNDAY 18th December at 3pm, there will be a Carol Service at St.Martins Church led by Rev. Bob Keys. Mince pies etc following. (There is no nativity this year but anyone wishing to get involved next year, please contact Alison Stevens)

WEDNESDAY 21st December at 6pm, on the Village Green. Mince pies and mulled wine will be served.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ONE AND ALL.

MANOR DRIVE PILLARS DAMAGED

The hamstone pillars at the entrance to the Manor Drive have been seriously damaged by a lorry.

The damage is thought to ave happened in the last week or so but did not come to light until a few days ago.

The pillars, which are Grade 2 listed, were designed by TH Wyatt in 1877 and formed the entrance to North Perrott Manor, which was designed and built at the same time.

The left hand pillar has been twisted at the base and will need completely dismantling and rebuilding to complete the repair.

If anyone saw the damage taking place, please contact Mrs Judith Hall at the Manor Farm. She is anxious to know the name of the person or business that was resposible for the damage.

MISSING DEFIBRILLATOR

North Perrott Defibrillator is located in East Street.

The village defibrillator was reported missing this morning.

It was last checked only a few days ago as being present and correct.

Does anyone know if it was used legitimately in the last few days?

If so, there’s no panic and I’m sure it will be returned in good time.

Otherwise, it will be reported lost and the Parish Clerk will have to make an insurance claim.

In the meantime, everyone (including me) will have to be careful to keep taking their pills!

Hopefully there will be a logical explanation and it will be returned safely…….
